Should my business buy software or build custom software?

Buy off-the-shelf software when your process is standard and a product already does it well. Build custom when the process is what makes your business different, when you are paying for several tools that still do not fit, or when the tools you have cannot share data. Many businesses are best served by the middle path: keep the products that work and build only the connections and pieces that are missing.

Off-the-shelf is right when

  • The process is the same for every business in your industry
  • A product covers most of what you need today
  • You can live with its limits

Custom pays off when

  • Your workflow is your advantage
  • You are stitching several subscriptions together by hand
  • Customers expect one experience across web, phone and app
  • You need to own your data and the software you depend on

The middle path

Connect what you already have, replace only what is holding you back, and build the missing pieces. It is usually faster, lower risk and easier on the budget than a full rebuild, and it can be done in stages without stopping the business.

Common questions

Who owns custom software you build?
Ownership of deliverables is set in the engagement agreement before work starts.
Can you build web and mobile apps together?
Yes. We build web platforms and native iOS and Android apps on one backend so customers have one account and the same data everywhere.
